  • Make writing a habit. The more you write, the easier it will become. Try to write at the same time every day, even if it's just for a few minutes. The Pomodoro Method is a great way to get into the habit with low committment and great success!

  • Talk to a friend. Talking to someone about your writing can help you to get unstuck. If you don't have a friend who's also a writer or invested in your writing life, you can find a writing group in your area via your local library, professional organization (like SCBWI for children's writers or MWA for mystery writers), or even by asking at your local bookstore! While the act of writing is rarely collaborative, the road to success depends on beta readers and others who invest in your work. Don't forget to cultivate those artistic friendships!

  • Find out when you're most creative. Some people are more creative in the mornings, while others prefer to write at night. Find the time of day when you feel most productive and make that your writing time.

  • Stay away from distractions. When you're trying to write, it's important to avoid distractions. Turn off your phone, close your email, and find a quiet place to work. Usng an app like Freedom can help minimize the interruptions!

  • Work on another section. If you're stuck on one part of your writing, try working on another section that interests you more. This can help you to get the creative juices flowing again. I call this the "snapshot" method of writing, because you're jumping to the next event that would be worthy of taking a photo of. You can always go back and piece together the missing parts!

  • Take a break. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a break from writing. Go for a walk, listen to some music, or do something else that will help you to relax. Maybe you really do need to put your laundry away and clean your kitchen before you have the mental bandwith to create again!

  • Write crap, let yourself make all sorts of mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes when they're writing. Don't let this stop you from writing. Just keep going and you'll eventually get to where you want to be. My favorite way to jumpstart the writing/no editing process is through Write or Die! It takes the Pomodoro Method to the next level by YELLING at you if you if you stop typing.

  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're really struggling, don't be afraid to ask for help. There are many resources available, such as writing workshops, online forums, and books.
